Taylor Hicks
Taylor's "Levon"
"Levon," was performed by Taylor on American Idol in the semifinals and brought Simon to change his opinion. Taylor also performed the Elton John song in the Top 2 competition. This is the beautiful pre-Idol version from WorkPlay in Birmingham, December 23, 2005.

"Early Works" recently reviewed by Mp3Boost
“The first album [In Your Time] included in this set was released at the peak of the 90’s soul/funk revival made popular through tribute albums, samples and alternative rock festivals and the sound that the album achieves should’ve easily made Hicks one of that areas shinning stars. ...Taylor and his great band somehow manage to marry R&B,funk,Southern rock, jazz, latin and folk flavors so successfully it’s hard to descern one from the other and is some of the finest of this kind of music I’ve heard since the heyday of the Allmans and the Doobie Brothers in the 70’s. ...this guy was (and still is in my opinion) someone with the drive, musicality and star power to make it as his own entity.
"The newer album [Under the Radar] is a bit harder driving and slightly slicker...Throughout this album Hicks’ writing, guitar as well as his vocal talents are highlighted and …it is more than worth the publics time to become acquainted with this music. Rating: 5 / 5" (Andre S. Grindle, 2.13.2010 on Mp3Boost)
Taylor and Lady Gaga...yes
Celebrity Extra online asked Taylor who he would like to work with. He answered: "Paul Simon would be a great collaboration for me. I really like his music. I would also like to a funk/R&B album with Lady Gaga. That’d be cool."

What was the moment of truth for each ‘Idol’ winner?
"Season five: Taylor Hicks ('Taking It To The Streets' Doobie Brothers) – He always stood out the moment he walked into the audition room with his salt-and-pepper hair and Joe Cocker moves. Simon hated him at first though his first semifinal performance of 'Levon' changed his mind.
"But this Doobie Brothers cover was the performance that put him on the map in terms of his manic energy and cheesy yet captivating appeal. 'Soul patrol!' he yelled after the judges spoke. I went back in my blog archives to March 8, 2006 and I ranked him tops for the night. What I wrote that night: 'He took the perfect song and brought it home! Michael McDonald should be proud. You may hate him and his odd mannerisms but you can’t take your eyes or ears off of him." (March 4, 2010, by Rodney Ho,American Idol Buzz blogger)
A poster on the same blog made an interesting assessment of the success of Taylor Hicks:
Mike S. posted on March 1st, 2010 --"...Think of all the people who come on this blog talking about what a complete failure Taylor has been. All along, I am thinking, You know I wish I was a COMPLETE FAILURE with 2 GOLD records and a million dollar contract with a touring musical that only requires me to be on stage 10 minutes a night."

"Grease" at Benedum Center/Pittsburgh, March 9-14
Kate McCaffrey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette asked Taylor:"...Is there anything you've learned since winning "American Idol" that you'd want current contestants to know?"
“To stay in the business …work and tour as much as you can. ... Make sure you tour. That's the thing. You have to be out there and tour and be with the people. People want to know that you're tangible.”
She also asked if participating in American Idol discredits a musician and his work.
“The thing that I was always taught by older musicians is not how you get there, it's if you get there. And ... the most important part is what you do with it when you get there. …and any way that you can get there ..you should…You can't just sit in your house and be a great musician. You have to get out there.”
"Whomp at the Warfield," concert plus interview DVD...
Taylor was asked recently by Celebrity Extra Online why he decided to make a concert DVD: "It shows me in a live setting, which is what I am good at. It’s where I thrive — that’s a good light for me to be in. I am really excited about it. I am really excited about the fact that people can see a really great live show in that setting."
