Taylor Hicks just added a Shadow Tour concert on September 25th at Workplay, a Birmingham night spot and familiar haunt to the Alabama native in younger days. He performs in the late night show during the week long run of "Grease" in the singer's hometown. Tickets go on sale Friday, June 12th.
A year and a lot of ice cream cones ago...
The malt shop ice cream cone with the sparkly, bluesy Taylor Hicks as Teen Angel has descended to the Grease stage a lot of times in the past year. Taylor debuted on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre June 6, 2008, in the role that has gained him notoriety and widespread acceptance as a Broadway theatre performer. It has been a year of change and much success!
It has proved a good move. The Broadway run of "Grease" was so successful, it was made part of the Broadway Across America National Tour. "Grease" has played to sold out crowds and packed houses all over the country including sold out performances just last week in Appleton, Wisconsin. A lot of people are dropping in to see Frenchy be chided by her Teen Angel for dropping out of high school.
Michigan welcomes Teen Angel...
Taylor talked to Michigan media as "Grease" moves to Detroit this week.
"'I was really nervous when Broadway came calling because I'd never done theater before,' Hicks said. 'Once I started getting comfortable in the role, the role started expanding. You can take a role and night in and night out, you can expand it.'
"One New York columnist said Hicks was the big draw to "Grease" last summer and contributed to sold-out houses of the Broadway production.
"Hicks said embellishing the role of Teen Angel started with the suit.
'I had a vision for the costume - they helped me design it to have a signature look.' Then Hicks added his own flourishes to the music by 'writing R&B lines for it.' He also showcases his harmonica skills, an instrument he's been playing since he was 16.
"The role of Teen Angel affords him the opportunity to 'observe musical theater,' he said. It's different than performing as a singer because 'there's a storyline involved.'" (www.mlive.com Bay City, Michigan)
A full summer schedule for "Grease" includes a visit to Canada in July and to Taylor's hometown of Birmingham in September. The Tony-nominated musical plays in towns all over the East and South through the 2009/2010 season. Grease Tour Schedule
